What kind of leather do you use?

Vegetable-tanned full-grain leather — hides tanned with tree bark over weeks, not chemicals over hours. Full-grain means the natural surface is intact, which is what allows the bag to develop a deep, personal patina with use rather than wearing through.

Is the bag hand-stitched?

Yes. Every seam is hand saddle-stitched with two needles and waxed linen thread at eight stitches per inch. The advantage over machine stitching: if one stitch breaks, the seam still holds. It is also why a single bag takes 200+ hours to make.

What about the hardware?

Solid cast brass — never plated. Brass develops its own patina over time and outlasts the leather it secures. We source from a small foundry that has supplied Japanese leather houses for three generations.

What does "burnished edges" mean and why does it matter?

Every cut edge of leather is sanded smooth, sealed, and polished by hand. It is the detail that separates an heirloom from a product — and the first thing to fail on cheaper bags, where edges are simply painted and crack within a year.

How long does each bag take to make?

200+ hours per piece. Cutting, skiving, stitching, edge finishing, hardware setting. A single backpack passes through the hands of three master artisans in our Nagoya atelier before it leaves.

Is there a warranty on the backpacks?

We stand behind the artistry of Murase Kabanko. Every backpack comes with a six-year limited warranty covering manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship. Normal wear and tear, or damage caused by improper care, are not covered.

Will a laptop fit inside?

Yes. The structured interior is designed to safely accommodate modern laptops (up to 14 inches in most models) and A4-sized documents without bending — ideal for the modern professional.

Is the backpack waterproof?

The leather is treated to be water-resistant for light rain. We recommend wiping any moisture away with a soft cloth and air-drying naturally to preserve the material's integrity.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes, we ship worldwide — delivery is free of charge. Delivery times vary by location and are confirmed at checkout.

What fees should I expect on a Japan-to-US order?

Delivery is free of charge. The customer pays any applicable taxes and duties.

Where are the backpacks manufactured?

Every backpack is handcrafted in Nagoya, Japan, by Murase Kabanko. With over 60 years of heritage, master artisans use traditional techniques that meet the highest standards of Japanese craftsmanship.

What makes these backpacks different from a traditional Randoseru?

The child's bag is the original Randoseru — with only slight refinements over the past seventy years. The other three bags keep the iconic silhouette and durability of the Japanese Randoseru, but are redesigned for adults using premium leathers and a minimalist aesthetic suited for professional environments, while preserving the original ergonomic and structural qualities.
